An Exemplary Art Collection of Keith Haring

Sotheby’s finally made Keith Haring’s 140+ art collection from iconic artists Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Jean-Michel Basquiat available for auction. According to another artist, Haring’s collection is a window into his own perspective; it reflects his relationships with artists with whom he is aligned stylistically, implicitly, and intellectually.

Highlighting the most exciting pieces for auction are those of Andy Warhol’s portrait of Keith Haring and Juan DuBose, Jean Basquiat’s untitled work, and Roy Lichtenstein’s Forms in Space.

In the 70’s Basquiat and Haring met. As the contemporary world thought of them as rivals, but they never were. Their ingenuity and excellence in arts made them better at what they do. The moment Haring received the bad news on Basquiat’s death of drug overdose, he created a masterpiece to honor Basquiat entitled: A Pile of Crowns, for Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Andy Warhol and Keith haring met through Christopher Makos–a photographer; back in 1982, it was a cold start for them since Warhol was a bit distant with people he doesn’t know yet. But their friendship grew more interesting as Warhol made forty by forty-inch painted portraits of Haring and his partner Juan Dubose–who later died of AIDS. sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2020/dear-keith-works-from-the-personal-collection-of-keith-haring/andy-warhol-portrait-of-keith-haring-and-juan?locale=en
