Richard Branson’s Hyperloop Propulsion Pods

An American transportation technology company known for its commercialized high-speed technology concept is currently the talk of the town. Virgin Hyperloop just achieved the world’s first passenger ride on a high-speed levitating pod system last November 2020, allowing them to conduct a critical safety test for technology, which expects to transform transportation real soon.

Back in 2012, Richard Branson first described the concept of Hyperloop–a new mode of mass transportation that would cut travel time significantly. In just eight years, their company took a step closer to making an ultra-high-speed pod that zips through a vacuum in a metal tube. 

It was quite challenging for Virgin Hyperloop to design a new form of mass transit while making it functional,  giving their future passengers a sense of familiarity so that people will ride more than once and not just as a novelty. Thus, comfort and safety, with fresh air, natural light, and greens were the most significant factors that the designers considered when developing the hyperloop. The design team was composed of several expert firms with their specialized functions from its interior, sound design, olfactive branding, station, to transportation feel and visuals. 

They installed a virtual skylight to provide ambient sunlight, that adjusts during the trip to help ease passengers throughout the journey. There were two zones provided for space, a moment zone-which is a moving friendly space, versus a static zone where the passenger can relax in their seats and socialize.

“The designers involved wanted to “instill trust and confidence” with their passengers, which meant “combining a familiar design scheme while including new yet intuitive additions to space.”

When it comes to the auditory occurrence, sonic techniques got it all covered by mitigating anxiety incorporated with high-speed travel. The founder of Man Made Music, Joel Beckerman, said that:

“The sonic language of the Hyperloop instills confidence, safety, and clarity—you ‘feel’ it rather than ‘hear’ it. We knew we got it right when you don’t notice the sound at all: The interface is humanized in ways that are both fresh and familiar.”

The design foresees responding to real-time growing conditions, striving for a human-centric, optimistic future. There will be adjustments due to the global pandemic, and public health will always be a priority to consider in creating this hallmark of transportation.
